SSC One-Time Registration (OTR) — Mandatory Step
Starting from 2025, SSC has introduced the One-Time Registration (OTR) system. Before applying for any SSC exam, you MUST complete the OTR process at ssc.gov.in. SSC Selection Process — Complete Guide
Stage 1 — Tier-I (CBT): Computer-Based Test with questions on General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, and English Comprehension. Usually 60-120 minutes, depending on the exam. Negative marking of 0.25 or 0.50 marks per wrong answer.
Stage 2 — Tier-II (CBT): Advanced exam with subject-specific papers. For CGL, this includes Quantitative Abilities, English Language, Statistics, and General Studies. For CPO, this includes English Language & Comprehension and General Awareness.
Stage 3 — Physical Test (for GD, CPO): Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and Physical Standard Test (PST), including running, height measurement, chest measurement, and other physical parameters.

An SSC CGL Inspector (CGST/Income Tax/Preventive/Examiner) is placed at Pay Level 7 under the 7th Pay Commission with a basic pay of Rs. 44,900. The gross salary is approximately Rs. 65,000 to Rs. 80,000 per month. In-hand salary is approximately Rs. 55,000 to Rs. 68,000 after deductions.
There is no limit on the number of attempts for SSC exams. You can appear as many times as you want, as long as you meet the age limit criteria for that particular exam. Age relaxation is available for SC/ST (5 years), OBC (3 years), and PwBD (10-15 years).
SSC CGL is for Graduate candidates and offers higher posts like Inspector, Tax Assistant, and ASO with a salary up to Level 8 (Rs. 47,600 basic).
