Eligibility Criteria

  1. Performance in JEE Main 2026: Must be among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates in Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech).
  2. Age Limit: Candidates should be born on or after October 1, 2001. (5 years relaxation for SC/ST/PwD; born on or after Oct 1, 1996).
  3. Number of Attempts: A candidate can attempt the exam a maximum of two times in two consecutive years.
  4. Appearance in Class 12: Must have appeared for the Class 12 exam for the first time in either 2025 or 2026.
  5. Earlier Admission at IITs: Candidates who have already been admitted to an IIT (regardless of whether they continued) are not eligible.

Exam Pattern & Marking Scheme

  • Mode: Computer Based Test (CBT) only.
  • Duration: 3 hours for each paper.
  • Subjects: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
  • Question Types: MCQs (Single Correct), MCQs (Multiple Correct), Numerical Answer Type (NAT), and Matching List.
  • Negative Marking: Applicable in most sections (usually -1 or -2 for incorrect answers). Partial marks are awarded in “Multiple Correct” sections if only some correct options are chosen.

What is the 75% marks rule for IIT admission in 2026?

To be eligible for admission to IITs, candidates must either score at least 75% aggregate marks in the Class 12 exam (65% for SC/ST/PwD) or be within the top 20 percentile of successful candidates in their respective board exams.

Can I appear for Paper 1 only?

No. It is mandatory to appear for both Paper 1 and Paper 2. If a candidate misses either of the two papers, they will be marked absent and will not be evaluated or ranked.
